Maybe you have seen a picture of a giant pumpkin lately or Maybe you remember going to a giant pumpkin event earlier on in the year?
And you want to know what you need? You could be an experienced gardener or a complete newbie to growing anything.
In this post I will share with you the items you need if you are starting to grow giant pumpkins from scratch.
The most important things you need are:
- Giant Pumpkin Seeds
- A place to grow a giant pumpkin plant
- Water
That is the absolutely BARE MINIMUM and it a great place to start.
Seed Type you Need
Atlantic Giant is the variety of seed you need. This produces the biggest pumpkins in the world.
To find out where to get giant pumpkin seeds from make sure to check out this page in the How To section on the website.
Location to Grow
For first time growers a location that has lots of sun and is OK for a pumpkin plant to grower.
Now the more space you have for this the better, but…
People sometimes get hung up on a giant pumpkin plant taking over, in fact it is one of the top reasons people don’t grow a giant.
I however have been growing in what I like to call the “Tiny Patch” for a couple of years now. In fact most of the tiny patch is actually concrete which is even more crazy.
But out of this very tiny piece of dirt, I have managed to get a 92kg pumpkin out of it.
More info about picking a place to grow your giant pumpkin can be found right here.
Water
You will need some water for your pumpkin plant. I know water can be hard for some areas or locations, whatever you can spare and being consistent with it is key.
And for the absolute BARE MINIMUM that is all you need.
Other items you should think about to increase the odds of having the biggest pumpkin around.
- Shade for your pumpkins
- Better seeds
- Watering systems
- Soil tests
- Cover crops
- Soil amendments
- Foliar testing
Like any hobby or pastime the more you put into it the more you will get out of it. Or in this case the bigger your pumpkin will be.
