It gives the pumpkin all the water and nutrients it needs, and if something happens to this, it may adversely affect your pumpkin and its growth.

Things to think about with the pumpkin in relation to the vine

  • The aim is to try and get the pumpkin at a 90 degree angle to the vine.
  • Vines that are near the pumpkin need to be loose to allow movement as the pumpkin grows and gets bigger.
  • Allow 1 metre either side of the pumpkin with no vines anchoring down into the ground to allow for growth, this may involve removing tap roots which will already be in the soil anchoring the plant.
  • Turning the vine away from the pumpkin allows it to grow without rubbing against the vine, a pumpkin growing on the outside of the curve of the vine is preferred.
  • If moving the vine, attempt to do this at the hottest point of the day, where you are less likely to cause breakages to the plant.
  • As the pumpkin grows and the loose vine lifts up with the growth of the pumpkin you might need to offer support via polystyrene blocks etc to help prevent any stem stress the plant might be receiving.

this section on positioning is not very informative. For instance what angle should the stem be.should the tap roots be freed from the soil close to the fruit so it can lift as it is growing?
